4 week project - start


Last 2 weeks I read the book Game Planner Intensive Course: Game Creation is 90% about Tempo by Hideo Yoshizawa in Chinese translated version. Tempo of games means interval, including combination of switching times, animation performance, speed of movement, button pressing, visual and auditory times etc.

The first chapter is about core creativity. Creativity of games shows in rules, methods, operation, design, plot and so on which break down to core idea, auxiliary core and expanding core. The most important of these is core idea about comforts in games.

There are three points of it:

- get a comfortable experience

- make it approach to the final goal

- accomplish the goal and gain a higher level of comforts

The core idea can be analyzed in three ways: theme(backdrop), concept(what to play) and system(mechanisms, methods of operation, methods of presentation etc.)



The second chapter is about how to create core ideas. Creativity is the combination of existing elements in new ways, thus we have to think how to bring a new playing experience to users.

Here are some ideas on creating core ideas:

- not based on exiting games

- not starting from a type

- simulate playing scenario in your head

- don't think too long about an idea.

- backward thinking

- support of visual effects

- target user

The first tow points link to the influence of some representative works that may restricted on ideas. The fourth point means we need divergent thinking.



As for my 4 week project, I decide to make a game about finding and hiding objects in a room within limited time. The inspiration comes with my childhood memory that my parents used to hid the TV controller before they went to work during my holiday, so I looked for it and watched TV secretly at home, and finally recovering it before they came home from work.

There are two main scenes in the game, the living room and the bedroom. In the living room, player can find out the TV controller and snacks for enjoyment and read comic books or do anything without doing homework. But remember to recover the room before parents come back. What’s more, don’t forget to finish the holiday homework as parents may check it suddenly so you have to balance between study and entertainment.
